High-Visibility & Reflective Float Keychains

A float that rides edge-on in a metre of chop is effectively invisible, and that is how keys get lost by things that technically floated. Recovery is a visibility problem as much as a buoyancy one, and it is decided by two things: which way up the fob sits, and what colour the face that ends up on top actually is.

Mass distribution decides the first. A fob with the ring weight low and the volume high self-rights and holds a face to the sky; a symmetrical slab does whatever the water tells it to. We shape these to sit face up loaded, then put the high-visibility colour and the mark on that face rather than on the side that ends up underwater.

Fluorescent orange and fluorescent yellow-green are the two that genuinely read at distance in daylight, against both open water and a dark hull. Reflective tape is a different tool: it does nothing in daylight and a great deal when somebody puts a torch on the water at dusk, so we treat it as an addition rather than a substitute.

Does reflective tape help in daylight?

Almost not at all. Reflective returns light to a source, so it works when somebody shines a torch across the water at dusk. In daylight it is fluorescent orange or yellow-green doing the work. Order both if the fob will be looked for at both times.

How do you make it float face up?

By putting the ring and its weight low and the volume high, so the fob self-rights under load rather than lying on whichever face it lands on. A flat symmetrical slab cannot do it, however brightly it is printed.
