About

Everybody photographs a bare fob. Nobody carries a bare fob.

Custom Floating Keychains makes closed-cell foam floats, sealed hollow bodies, high-visibility and reflective builds, cork floats, wrist-coil sets and opener fobs — quoted by the grams of key they will hold, not by the word floating.

Custom printed floating keychains with logo

Search for a floating keychain and every photograph shows the same thing: a bright fob bobbing on its own in clean water, with nothing attached to it.

That picture is true and useless. What decides whether your keys come back is net buoyancy — what the float displaces, minus the mass of everything on the ring. One modern car fob will take most promotional floats straight under.

Then two more things settle the rest: whether the material absorbs water, and whether anybody can see the thing once it is out there.

Why we exist

Floating keychains are sold on a photograph and a colour, and the three things that actually decide the outcome — payload, absorption and visibility — appear on nobody’s quote.

All three are settled before anything is moulded, and none of them is expensive.

Payload, in grams, on every quote

We ask what goes on the ring before we recommend a fob: house key, car fob, padlock key, bottle opener. Then we quote the key weight that float will hold at the surface.

If the number is close to zero for the fob you liked, we say so before you order rather than after somebody watches their keys go down.

Closed-cell, or it is a sponge

Open-cell foam and untreated cork have somewhere for water to go, so they ride lower every month until one day they do not come back up.

Closed-cell EVA has sealed cells and does not absorb. A sealed hollow body does not either — until it is punctured, at which point it becomes a sinker with no warning. We state which failure mode you are buying.

Floating is half the job

A fob riding edge-on in chop is invisible from a metre away, and plenty of keys have been lost by things that technically floated.

Mass low, volume high, so it self-rights under load. Then the fluorescent colour and the reflective panel go on the face that ends up pointing at the sky.

Fluorescent for daylight, reflective for a torch

Fluorescent orange and yellow-green are what read at distance in daylight, against open water and against a dark hull.

Reflective does almost nothing in daylight and a great deal when somebody puts a beam across the water at dusk. They are two different tools, so we quote them as two.

Attach first, float second

On a moving craft or in a current, a float only helps if you notice, can see it and can get back to it. None of those is guaranteed.

So we pair floats with wrist coils, clips and lanyard loops — and we subtract their mass from the payload, because a spec that ignores it describes a fob nobody carries.

What we will talk you out of

The small block when the keys are heavy. Unsealed cork for daily commercial use. A steel opener when anodised aluminium does the same job at half the mass. Reflective alone for a daytime operation.

And anything safety-rated — these are key-recovery aids, never life-saving appliances or personal flotation devices, and we will send you elsewhere rather than imply otherwise.
