It also absorbs. Cork is a natural cellular material with cell walls that take on water gradually, so an unsealed cork fob rides progressively lower over a season of real use and its payload falls with it. That is the material behaving normally rather than a fault, and it is the thing nobody mentions until the reorder.

There are two honest routes. A surface seal slows absorption considerably and keeps the look, at the cost of some of the texture, and it wears at the corners where the fob rubs.
